Ԫ Tracy Knofla: Thriving In Chaos

My Favorite Things

My house was renovated over the winter. What a great feeling it was to get rid of two walls. You can't believe how that small change completely opened up my kitchen and dining room - as well as my spirits! My new space still makes me smile, five months later.

This structural change opened up many new possibilities for decorating and entertaining, but it also posed a problem. I lost four sides of wall space to hang things on. Believe me, those four walls held A LOT of things. Vacation memories, my prized sun collection, and two shelves filled with mementos.

I didn't really think that part of the renovation through. I wasn't prepared to rearrange all of the things that were important to me, or to lose any. However, once I came to terms with it, this renovation has become an excellent exercise for me in identifying what is really important to me.

My sun collection, previously about 30 suns strong, has shrunk to my favorite 8. And I am perfectly happy with those 8. My vacation art has become even more important to me and I have worked hard to find a new home for most of it. The shelves with all of the decorative things didn't make the cut. I sold most of them at a yard sale.

I feel lighter. I feel that I am surrounded now with only the things that really matter to me. I feel refreshed in my new space. If you had told me a year ago that I would do a huge purge of my possessions I wouldn't have believed it was possible. But once I made the decision to let go, I gave myself the freedom to let go of much more than I expected.

Is it time for you to do a renovation?

Have a great day!
Tracy
