Ԫ Tracy Knofla: Thriving In Chaos

Hats off to Mom

If you've seen me at a workshop, you probably know I do not have children of my own.  I always say that is why I am so happy and take such great vacations!  That is not to say, however, that I don't have children.  I have nieces and nephews and Godchildren and neighborhood children.  I really do love them; especially when I get to send them home.

This past week I had two of my nephews visit for three days.  They are 11 yrs and soon to be 10 yrs old, and cousins who fight and fuss like brothers. Overall, it was a great visit except for the constant refereeing.  I've had them before, but it never affected me like this week.  I learned some important things that help me empathize with many of the women that I meet in my workshops.

 1. There are a couple of amazing moments scattered among many disagreeable moments.  I learned to pay attention to the former and shake off the latter.
  2. A 'clean house' took on a new definition.  Everything just took longer to do.  I had to become more comfortable with the new definition.
  3. The kids did help with some chores when given the right motivation.  For us, it was loud music that they selected while we worked.  I love that these kids know Yellow Submarine by heart!
  4. I created and adjusted many 'plans' while they were with me.  I found it helpful to share the plan with them and adjust it as time, energy, or interest changed.

After they left, I slept like a baby, really cleaned my house, and enjoyed a schedule free weekend.  Boy, I miss them!

Maybe there is some nugget you can glean from my experience that will help you thrive this month.

BTW - Hats off to my Mom, who thrived while raising five children!
