Have a Little Faith
The weather has gone crazy of late. Tornadoes, flooding, and severe thunderstorms have caused chaos throughout the United States. Natural disasters including earthquakes and tsunamis have plagued the world this year as well. The devastation of the people and places affected by these events is of a magnitude that I cannot fathom. There are not enough Thriving Tips to help folks through that kind of chaos.
And yet, as I read reports from survivors, I do see some common themes. People speak of the kindness of their neighbors. How their communities have come together to support each other and to offer extraordinary help. They express their sincere conviction that their faith will get them through this trying time. Many seem filled with a quiet spirit that provides them with the strength required to persist, and then they ask for our prayers. They are not the ones asking us to send money to the Red Cross. They are not yet asking for material goods from those of us watching their plight from afar. They want us to pray for them - to send our very best wishes for their survival. Many of us do.
Faith and prayer can play a significant role in helping people to thrive. Within the last few months I have had the opportunity to experience faith from many different religions and workplace points of view. I conducted a workshop for a company with Muslim employees who pray during the workday. I participated in a beautiful Passover Seder meal, appreciating the prayers in Hebrew that expressed gratitude for all that God has provided. I was invited to a First Communion mass for my 7 year old twin neighbors where we were asked to pray for their spiritual lives. Most recently, I had a transformational experience speaking during staff enrichment day at a Christian College in New York. All of these events have compelled me to write this tip. I hope that the spirit which moved me to write this is available to you at a time you feel most vulnerable and that it provides you with a measure of comfort.
Have a great week!
