Ԫ Tracy Knofla: Thriving In Chaos

How Ambitious Are You

My neighbor just returned from a two-week Caribbean vacation with his family.  While recounting his vacation adventures, he made a statement that really made me think.  He said it was great being on vacation, but since he is a teacher his summer is precious to him and he had an extensive to-do list.  So while he was on vacation, he was thinking about all of the things he was not accomplishing. Not that it ruined his vacation, but it did weigh on his mind.  It started me thinking of the to-do lists that we create and the expectations we put on ourselves about what we “should” be accomplishing.

How ambitious are you?  I often wonder if our to-do lists might be too much like the old saying, “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach.”  Most of us have taken too much to eat at a special dinner, only to leave half of it on our plates. Sometimes our desire for the food is greater than our ability to ingest it all. Is our desire to accomplish everything greater than the energy we have to get it done?

How ambitious is your to-do list? Do you ever feel that you are caught up or do you always feel behind in your work? Does it weigh on you - making you feel that you never get anything done?  In the summer, I usually pick going to the lake over all of the chores I have on my list.  In the summer, I am not ambitious.  I give myself a “break” because the summer is very short for me. During the other three seasons I am very ambitious. And I enjoy seeing the results of that ambition just as much as I enjoy laughing with my neighbors at the lake. You choose how ambitious you want to be this week!

Enjoy the lazy, hazy, crazy, days of summer for they are over way too soon!
