Necessity is the Mother of Invention
Necessity is the mother of invention. This old adage really speaks to me during this current economic recovery. Times of adversity are generally thought to bring out the best in people. It engages the brain in new thought patterns, forces us to rethink the way we do business, and fires the entrepreneurial spirit. Is any of this true for you? Or has this all become too much? Are you thriving right now? If not, maybe it’s time to do something differently.
At home, you are probably making lots of different decisions in order to save your household budgets. You may be buying generic products, eating at home a few extra meals, renting DVD’s instead of going to the movies, and making arrangements with family members or neighbors for childcare instead of paying babysitters. You do these things in order to maintain your household in a way that serves you all.
In the office however, too many people are using “they cut my budget” as an excuse for not moving forward. Budget cuts do hurt some things. But not all things. Don’t let a budget cut be an excuse to stop providing new products or services. If your office budget has been cut – like millions of other workers nationwide - instead of using 101 excuses for why you cannot do new things, use the skills of collaboration, brainstorming, and resource sharing to figure out new ways of being successful. Talk openly with your co-workers about the impact of the budget cuts and work with them to find new opportunities. Now is the time to use the collective brainpower in your departments to do some things differently.
Go think big thoughts today!
