Ԫ Tracy Knofla: Thriving In Chaos

New Year, New Spirit

Happy New Year! During this holiday season I had an encounter that I wanted to share with you as a tip for the New Year.

On Christmas Eve, my family went to mass at 4pm. It was packed, people standing 3 deep around the seats.  Those of us lucky enough to be sitting were squished in.  Not really the most conducive environment for centering ones self to celebrate the season.  I heard babies crying and people grumbling all around me.  Until that is, the priest entered the church.

Nearly bounding in, the priest’s grin was so wide that it actually sparkled.  He was showing us how happy he was to be there. His energy instantly transformed the cranky congregation.  He proceeded to tell us that he was newly ordained and that this was his first Christmas celebrating mass as a priest.  A spontaneous applause erupted.  He also told us that he had no family here in the States as he had emigrated to the U.S., and that he was excited to be with us, his new family.  The rest of the service was imbued with his spirit, which was contagious to the crowd.  We were all enchanted with his story and the excitement with which he did his job.

It made me think about how many of us do our jobs. Do we bring a positive spirit with us to work?  Is it contagious to others?  Can you make your job feel “brand new” in any way? I think of new employees and how happy they are to be at their job.  Is this spirit nurtured by others or mocked?  Just think how much happier we could be at work if we adopted a “brand new” attitude and let our positive spirit shine.

I hope you can see me “glowing” from here!  All the best to you in the New Year!

Tracy
