Running on Empty
Have you ever run out of gas in your car? I never have because there is a rule in our household that states: "The driver walks if you run out of gas," and I never wanted to test it! However, this past summer I came awfully close. Due to a variety of reasons, I found myself running on empty, in an unfamiliar part of town, low fuel light blinking frantically.
I had been in that part of town occasionally, but did not know it very well. I did however, know where the gas station was, and drove, white- knuckled, literally, coasting into the pump. I filled up and vowed never to get so low on fuel again. I hated the feeling of dread that I experienced on my way there.
Upon recounting this story to my neighbor, AJ, he said I need not have worried because they design cars to have more fuel than you think when the light starts blinking. Great news to me! Later, he and I took a drive around the area where I had run low on gas. All of a sudden he burst out laughing. There on a corner was a gas station, and not a block away, was another. I had driven more than a mile past these two gas stations on my frantic search for the one I knew about. This got me thinking…
How many times do we pass by resources that might be useful to us because we are focused on doing our own thing? Who have we neglected to include because we are sure that we are the only ones who can handle this task? I suspect that we pass by helpful resources quite often. Tunnel-vision increased the chaos I experienced on that summer day. Don’t let a narrow focus take away an opportunity for you to reduce yours.
Have a great day – and don’t forget to top off your tank!
