Ԫ Tracy Knofla: Thriving In Chaos

Try this recipe

Have you decided to try a new recipe this holiday season?  Nearly every Women’s magazine is exploding with recipes.  The ones I particularly like are the recipes labeled “Make Ahead of Time.”  They give you all of the steps to start the dish one day and to finish it another. I wish other areas of our lives could come with such explicit directions.

This time of year is particularly difficult.  In addition to the daily chaos we are managing, the holidays bring a host of other expectations; cook, shop, decorate, wrap, party, out-do yourself, and make it memorable.  It is very easy to become overwhelmed with all there is to do.

Take a hint from those convenience recipes.  Break down your tasks into manageable bits.  Ask yourself, what can be done right now - in these 10 minutes of free time?  Can you cook that dish?  Probably not, but you can pull the ingredients out and make sure you have everything?  Can you get all of your gifts purchased this week?  Probably not, but you can review your gift list and see which gifts need to be purchased soon, so that you can put them in the mail?

Create manageable tasks and then take some action. Find those tasks that are THE MOST IMPORTANT, then get some part of them done. Even the smallest action on your part will help you feel a sense of accomplishment.

Everyone gets overwhelmed.  The best way to re-gain your focus and forward momentum is to identify the most important things and take some action on them.  That often means starting a task and finishing it at some later date.  Just like a wonderful “Make Ahead” recipe – follow the steps, refrigerate, and enjoy it when you are ready.

Have a great Thanksgiving.  Let me know the new recipes you tried!
