Wait Your Turn!
As I write this tip, I am waiting. It's my own fault. I didn't confirm the time of my rendezvous. Normally I HATE to wait. I get anxious and frustrated. I find I am not alone in this - most people get impatient when they wait. Why do we get so frustrated about the wait? Our world is filled with waiting; think about your grocery store, gas station, or local coffee joint there are lines everywhere. Isn't waiting a part of the fabric of our culture? In fact, we were all taught from an early age to wait our turn. We dutifully stood in line to go out to recess and get our hot lunch. When I was young, it was no big deal to wait. There was always someone to get in trouble for giggling with! But now?
Technology has changed our expectations about waiting. We can do many more things by ourselves and immediately. No lines, no waiting. I heard a story this weekend about a friend of mine who went to see a fireworks show - at 4:30pm, in order to get great seats. (The actual fireworks started at 9:30pm) I asked about the long wait and she said that rather than being frustrated and anxious about it, she made an event of it, bringing good food and a good book. The wait was actually as much fun as the fireworks.
Some things are better when you wait for them. My friends who import wine will tell you that some bottles should be purchased today and enjoyed in 2012. We need to become more comfortable with waiting. Have fun things to occupy yourself with instead of feeling angry. Make small talk with someone, or read the magazines in line at the grocery store. Take two minutes to reflect (as I am always encouraging you to do) while you are waiting for something else to happen. Sometimes waiting for something makes it more important when you finally get it!
Enjoy your day!
Tracy
PS. I had to wait three hours, 2nd tip, always confirm your appointments!
