Ԫ Tracy Knofla: Thriving In Chaos

Bring On the Buy-In!

I have had the pleasure of facilitating a number of Thriving In Chaos programs across the country recently.  They are always fun and typically unpredictable.  I never really know what will happen with the volunteer or with the audience. That's why the program stays fresh for me.

During these programs I have seen a variety of responses from the Superstar (volunteer).  She usually holds most of the objects until someone in the audience caves in and helps her.  Or she makes jokes about her plight until I finally give her permission to do something different.  However, at a program a week ago, the Superstar had all of the items placed on her, and less than a minute later she dropped everything.

Now, I have seen this from time to time, but not often. When asked why she dropped everything, she stated that she "didn't care about it." This made me start thinking about one key point. Buy-in.  She obviously did not have buy-in to the exercise. I must not have done my job in helping her see why her participation was important to the learning outcomes of the session.

How about you?  Have you been effective in garnering buy-in with your employees, co-workers, or family?  Because if others are not invested in the goals you are working on, they will not care about the quality of their work.  Be sure to explain to others why their role is important, whether it's in keeping their room clean, or completing their part of a group project on time. It may take a bit more work on your part, but helping others to become invested in the venture will save you lots of chaos in the end!

Have a great day!
