celebrate your accomplishments!
I'm a party girl, although you probably already know that!
Seriously, I
grew up in a family of "celebrators." Every holiday had special
decorations, yummy food and a wonderful feeling. Every birthday
was a
joyful event. It wasn't until my early adulthood I realized not
all
families celebrated the holidays and birthdays in such a spectacular
way. I'm glad we did!
Celebrations, in addition to being fun, mark special events
in our life.
Take birthdays for instance. On our special day we are given
permission
to reflect on the current day, as well as remember the previous
ones. We
are invited into the spotlight to accept well wishes from others
and to
embrace the camaraderie we share. There may even be presents
- ones we
requested as well as some surprises. And of course, there's also
CAKE!!!! This celebration makes it easier to face that age
transition-especially for milestone birthdays.
Why don't we feel the same need to celebrate in our workplace
or when we
accomplish an exceptionally difficult task? Why have we denied
ourselves
the privilege of being in the spotlight or to formally make a
transition
to a new challenge?
Perhaps it's the "I don't have time to celebrate -
I'm always on to the
next thing." way of life. I think it's time to break the never ending
cycle of: accept the project, pour heart and soul into the project,
finish project and accept a new project. Take some time to celebrate
the
accomplishment of your goals. Take some time to reflect on the
project
and your role in completing it.
Buy yourself a cake and celebrate a job well done!
