Cup of Tea Anyone?
I received a beautiful gold tea cup as a gift from a friend the other day. She told me that when she saw it, “it just reminded me of you.” What a nice compliment.
I’m a tea person. Not that I won’t enjoy a cup of coffee after a good meal, but when left to my own devices, I drink tea. My favorite tea is cinnamon, followed by mint. A nice cup of tea takes me to my happy place.
Growing up, whenever I visited my grandmother, she invited me to sit and have a cup of tea with her. On real china. With pretty napkins. She always had lemon and cream as well as sugar cubes. My Mom offers me the same thing and I nearly always say yes. A cup of tea with my Mom is an invitation for a good chat. I really appreciate that.
Today as I run through airports around the country, I am struck by how many people are lined up – at all times of day - at Starbucks or whatever the coffee joint is in that airport. They wait in line, blank or worse, dour expressions on their faces, waiting for their morning, afternoon, or evening pick me up. It’s nearly always coffee.
Now, I’m not an expert on this at all, but here’s what I’ve come to realize: people use coffee to energize themselves. They use it to “kick start” some part of their life. Lots of people joke about needing that caffeine “fix” to get them through their day. Honestly, instead of getting a jolt to get them through the day, they probably really need more of the comfort that comes from having a good cup of tea.
Much has been made recently in the news about the healing properties of tea. Green, black, white, Oolong, Chai, etc. Supposedly it can heal just about anything if we drink enough of it. Heck, today I washed with a white tea body shampoo.
I won’t dispute that, however, I believe the real healing powers in tea are its ability to help you relax. To give you time to reflect. To help you have a great conversation with someone. Maybe in this crazy chaotic world, instead of continuously jacking ourselves up on coffee, we should be having lots more tea parties. Invite a friend over for tea. See if you don’t feel much better afterward!
Have a great day!

PS…I know there are coffee drinkers who feel relaxed drinking coffee. Don’t write me – instead, invite someone over for a nice cup of coffee and have a good chat!
