Don't Worry, Be Happy!
It took me 47 years to figure this out. I am a worrier. I don't like it! It's not what I would choose for myself. Nonetheless, I have finally become honest about it. I worry.
For those who know me, this may come as a shock. You probably don't know this about me. I REALLY didn't know it about myself until recently and I definitely don't share my worries with others. But I worry about a lot of things.
Will I get to the airport on time?
Will the audience respond as I hope?
Will my dinner party turn out as I planned?
Many things I worry about are out of my control. That's probably why I worry about them! I like to be in control.
But now that I know this about myself, I intend to change my habits. All this worrying does not solve anything. All the worry does is interrupt a good night's sleep and take up valuable 'awake and thinking time.'
I am going to be more intentional with my worrying. I will worry about things I can control and worry less about what I can't. I will also take actions that can lessen my worries.
For instance, I will leave 20 minutes earlier for the airport, insuring an on-time departure. I will ask more questions about my next audience to make sure my remarks are appropriate. And I will stop experimenting on my friends with new recipes when I cook for them. (All right - I can't stop experimenting on my friends, but I can warn them in advance!)
What can you worry about less?
