Ôªø Tracy Knofla: Thriving In Chaos

Experience Counts

Several things have happened in the last few months to create this note to you. A new president was elected, a tree fell on my house, and a pilot and crew safely landed a plane on a river and saved everyone. Few of these events have any direct connection with each other, yet all are connected by one important element, EXPERIENCE.

Experience counts in all of these examples:

1. Presidential candidate Obama was criticized for lacking experience in many important aspects of the duties of a president. What did he do? He found a running mate who had many years of experience and pledged to utilize Joe Biden's expertise in a way that few Vice-Presidents have ever been used.

2. A large tree fell on my house and as I have already written to you, the process used to remove the tree involved lots of consultation between very seasoned tree professionals. The whole ordeal was made easier for me because I trusted the expertise of the workers.

3. Called the "Miracle on the Hudson" by the media, the extraordinary landing of the US Airway plane on the Hudson River by pilot "Sully" Sullenberger was less miracle and more the result of the experience of a 57 year old professional pilot who had been flying since he was fourteen.

Who in your life (work or personal) has the necessary experience to:
- Give you good counsel
- Help you trust them enough to delegate tasks to
- Create "miracles" in your life?

I am confident that when you pay attention, you will find others who have experience in areas that impact you. Perhaps a co-worker has lots of experience in an area you have just inherited. Use their experience to help you. Or maybe your mother gives you advice about childcare. Take the advice in the spirit with which it is offered - whether you solicited it or not! Remember too, age is not always the best indicator of experience. Right now, if I needed help learning to text message or to master Guitar Hero, I would ask my 12-year-old nephew. He has an extraordinary amount of experience in these matters.

Let your experience show and respect the experience of others!

Enjoy the Day!
