Get in good financial shape!
I had the good fortune a few years ago to speak at the same program as money maven, Suze Orman. She’s a pretty cool lady. For those of you who don’t know her, she has made an extremely successful career helping people (especially women) learn to use their money wisely. She is a straight talker. I like that about her. When she discussed financial strategies like, knowing your credit score and how to decide the right amount of debt for your income, I was right with her. I took lots of notes. I bought the book for my sister who loves her. I was hooked.
Even now, I watch her cable television program as she gives advice to people about their finances. But it’s just now, at least three years later; her message is sinking in, becoming a part of who I am. I want to be a person who is more responsible with money.
It’s not that I have so much to manage. It’s just that I don’t want to have to constantly worry about it. I want it to be one less thing that takes up space in my brain. One less debate to have with my sweetheart, one less thing keeping me awake at night.
I haven’t seen a special money advisor, although that’s probably a great idea. I haven’t made any great investments, although again, probably a good thing to investigate. What I have done is changed the poor money habits I have developed over the years. Now I ask myself every time I spend money, if I really need to spend it. If the answer is yes, then I make a guilt-free purchase. If the answer is no, I walk away, feeling a bit better about my ability to pay the mortgage that month. A very simple strategy - that has made a huge difference in my life. Maybe there is something you can change to help you keep more of YOUR change!
Sleep well tonight!
