Ôªø Tracy Knofla: Thriving In Chaos

Get Organized!

Organization means different things to different people. When my mother
said "I want this room organized," she was referring to all clothes and
books picked up and no clutter. Whenever I hear the phrase "get
organized," it makes me think of an empty desk, a clear floor and a
sense of order. It also scares me a little!

I believe it is important to be organized--especially during times of
chaos. But what is organization, really, other than a system for
managing things?

My personal organization system is management by piles. I have piles
everywhere and usually know what's in each pile. Is this more
"organized" than an alphabetized filing system with color coded labels?
The end result is the same. I can find something when you ask for it. I
just never feel organized enough.

I find times that are most chaotic for me is when I am trying to be
something that I am not. It's true in most areas of my life--but never
more evident than when I get "the urge to organize" - because of the
latest book out on the subject.

Choose a method of organization that is natural for you and sucessfully
utilize it. You will feel that sense of pride as you retrieve the purple
folder with this month's bills from under pile #3. Do it with a
flourish, to show confidence that you are organized.

I'm off to find next month's column; I know it's here somewhere...
