Manage Good Employees Too!
Policy manuals are filled with page upon page of do's and don'ts. Most of which are developed as a result of bad employee conduct - usually former bad employees. Managers are tasked with knowing the policy manual contents and using it as a guide to supervise their current employees.
As I interact with employees I often hear them complain about either a lack of supervision or about getting e-mails or postings from their supervisor about workplace issues that do not pertain to them specifically. To these folks, it feels that their supervisors only manage them as if they were problematic employees.
Yet, when I speak to a group of management staff – no matter the industry – and I ask them if they have good employees, overwhelmingly they answer, "Yes!" So, on the one hand we have mangers bragging they have good employees, and on the other, we have employees who are not feeling the love. Interesting issue to be sure – but I guess you might be wondering why this topic is part of a thriving tip. Here's why…
Employees who feel appreciated are more motivated and generally more satisfied with their work. Words of encouragement and recognition, as well as regular assessment of their work, create a sense of security and stability for employees - allowing them greater focus on their job.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease – the "problem" employee gets the supervision. Resolve to manage your good employees too. They need you more!
