Happy New Year!
Do you think I'm a bit early? Perhaps, but after working in higher education for 20+ years, I have become accustomed to celebrating two New Years. Okay, no champagne and carousing in September, but I still get that same anticipation in September that I get in January - as if, there is a new beginning in the offing.
As a child, a new school year is another chance. Maybe the boy in the seat next to you will notice you this year. Or perhaps you will learn to conjugate all of the tenses in Spanish class. Or, maybe, you won't get picked last for kickball. In school, these are called hopes and dreams. As an adult, out of school, they are called goals and objectives.
When was the last time you reviewed your goals and objectives? Please tell me you have some! It occurred to me, as I prepare to write this, how important it is to have goals - to set your sights on things that are important to you, and create a plan to make it happen.
When someone is training for a marathon (don't worry, it's not me!), they have to figure out how to fit numerous two, three and four hour training sessions into their life. No matter how busy they are.
It reaffirms for me, a philosophy I have held for years. That is, people make time to do what's important to them. The problem for many of us is that we don't clearly identify what is important to us. Thus, we let lots of other things fill up our time, and cheat ourselves of the opportunity to be successful.
So this September, celebrate another new year, and use this opportunity to set some goals that you will make time to work on!
Gotta go, I think I will pop a cork tonight!
