Join a Professional Association
I am literally who I am today in so many ways because I
joined a professional organization in my discipline. I became
a strong volunteer and learned so much about volunteer organizations.
I also met many wonderful people from all over the country, many
of whom have become my dearest friends. I especially enjoyed
it because I had a ready made audience who understood exactly
what my job was and who could give me great advice. I learned
more helpful hints on being a better professional from association
colleagues than I ever did on the job. It was a safe place to ask the
questions I didn't want to ask my boss (and risk looking like I didn't
know my job!)
Involvement on even just the membership level in your professional
organization will give you the network you need and keep you
up to date on the latest practices of the profession.
Did you try it out in the beginning and think it was not right
for you? Try again. Leadership and culture change frequently
in these organizations and you might just be pleasantly surprised
by what they can now offer you.
I know you probably would rather just join a list serve or do
some networking online. These are fine, but really are no substitute
for actual, in-person meetings with folks who share your passion
and frustrations.
Go ahead, join something today!
