Opposites Interact

"Opposites attract." That's a common phrase. How many times have you seen a married couple that seems to be total opposites? You might shake your head and wish them luck under your breath. Their union doesn't seem to make sense. And yet, many on-line dating sites try to match you with people who are like you. They assure you that you will find your "soul-mate" within 6 months or your money back, guaranteed!

Which is best hanging with people who are more like you, or those wildly different from you? Well, it is easy to be with people like you. If you can finish each others thoughts, you are in synch. Very smooth sailing. Yet, when you are surrounded by people more like you than not, you miss out on some amazing self awareness opportunities. And, I might add, opportunities to thrive!

Several of my closest friends and many of my business associates are totally different from me. In fact, a couple are totally the opposite of me. I have intuitively known that opposites interact, just as long as I have known that they attract. But I haven't always appreciated them as much as I do now.

One of my closest friends, beth, (yes, small letters) is totally different from me. We have been friends for nearly a quarter of a century. (That's a really long time!) She has a perspective on life and work that I do not have. Her insights are always amazing to me because I never see them coming. There is no predictability with beth.

However, what I have learned from beth about myself is incredible. She sees me differently than others and tells me so. She is responsible for some of my latest tips because she told me recently that all of the stories I was recounting to her about my travels have an interesting bend to them one that would make great thriving tips. I thought I was just venting to my friend and then she surprised me by helping me see the lessons in my life experiences.

Opposites attract and should interact. Those who are different from us can help us see things we don't see and give us advice we would never think of - both in business and in our personal lives. Make it your goal to appreciate your opposites and to interact with them more often! There will never be a dull moment guaranteed!

Enjoy the Day!
