out with the old
I am so happy to say good bye to 2011! It was a year filled with bad experiences for almost everyone I love. Just as I thought it couldn't get any worse, the phone would ring or a text would appear proving me wrong. I have said all year that it felt to me that mini tornadoes were brushing by me, stirring my hair, getting me dirty, but not really knocking me down. Except, as I reflect on the enormity of some of the experiences and the implications moving forward, I realize that I did indeed, soak in some negative energy and was impacted much more deeply than I first realized. This was an important revelation, leading to a more thorough appraisal of what I learned this year.
First, it proved that I am wonderfully human. I think somewhere along the way I believed myself invincible – a notion that has not served me well. Think of how crazy this seems to me, the woman who has shown many of you that we are not Superman! Even the teacher needs a whack on the side of the head from time to time!
Next, I learned that I am a good friend, partner, sister, daughter, co-worker. I am strong, sensible, selfless, tenacious, and smart. Other people matter deeply to me. This list of adjectives may seem egotistical as you read this, but I have had to access all of these traits this year, and frankly, was surprised at my repertoire, as well as my ability to move through them seamlessly.
Finally, I reaffirmed my belief in a higher power. Seldom has a year required my faith as deeply as this one. I asked many favors and gave many thanks this year. In addition, I was amazed at how often this year I was in exactly the place I was supposed to be. Since my work requires me to be on the road, a few miracles put me close to home or near long-distance friends at just the right time.
As I look ahead to 2012, I hope for a few less challenges. I pray for good health, happiness and prosperity for those I love, and I will continue to give thanks for my ability to support, teach, and bolster the spirits of those I encounter.
Take a moment to reflect on what last year taught you, and vow to look forward with an open spirit to this New Year!
All the best to you in 2012!
