YOU ALMOST DID NOT RECEIVE THIs!
We've all heard the following two quotes: "Patience is a virtue" and "Good things come to those who wait." How about this one?
"Patience is the companion of wisdom." - Saint Augustine
In our hurry-up, get-it-done-now world we don't give much credence to the notion of waiting. In fact, you can order something on Tuesday at 11pm online and (if you pay enough,) receive it by 10:30am on Wednesday.
Not everything, however, is best served by completion at the speed of sound. Certainly there are important decisions that are best made after a bit of contemplation. There are life lessons to be learned through the discipline of waiting. And many of us will attest to the fact that good things, have indeed, come to us after a period of waiting.
I worry that when we value the speed of an action over the quality of the action we set ourselves up for disappointment. Sometimes it is better to simply "get it over with", but more often I think, deep down, the quality of our efforts is where we get the most personal satisfaction. In the "get it done quickly" mode we lose our sense of satisfaction, and thus feel a disconnect with the accomplishment.
We also tend to forget that there is a natural order to things, whether it be harvesting a garden or waiting for a promotion. Rushing either process will bring less than desirable results. That doesn't mean we should't tend the garden, watering, feeding, weeding. Or that we shouldn't stop doing a great job at work and make sure that the right people take note. But instead of worrying that they are not happening fast enough, let's embrace the partners of patience and wisdom and trust that good will come to us with the passing of time.
Thanks for patiently waiting for your next thriving tip!
