Ԫ Tracy Knofla: Thriving In Chaos

Recalculating

Do you have a GPS system for your car? They are pretty cool. They can tell you where you are at any place on the planet and how to get anywhere else on the planet. The technology even knows how fast you are going and how long it will take to get to your destination. It's amazing!

It also has a feature which has been the subject of much humor from my circle of friends. The GPS device offers you several voices to choose from when giving you turn-by-turn directions. It utters the words that send us into hysterics, such as "recalculating." Whenever you deviate from the directions given, the GPS voice calmly states: "recalculating." So matter-of-factly that we want to intentionally go the opposite direction just to hear it say the word. We secretly wish it would raise its mechanical voice and tell us what it really thinks of our poor directionality.

Too bad we don't have an internal GPS that calmly tells us when we have veered from our destination. Or do we? I think we DO have this internal device. It's just that our internal voice is NOT calm, NOT impartial, NOT patient, and certainly NOT TOLERANT of our mistakes. We don't simply say to ourselves, "I've taken a wrong turn and need to recalculate."

If ever there was a time to recalculate, this is it. Lots of companies are recalculating their operating procedures in a depressed economy. Many families are recalculating their spending habits to accommodate the economic downturn. What could you be recalculating? Have you veered off your work goals/diet/resolutions/parenting strategies/balance/financial plan/etc...? Locate your inner GPS. Calmly recalculate and get back on the road!

Happy Driving!
