A Little Cheese with that Whine...
Patti from Wisconsin provided a great new word for the dictionary after the last Thriving Tip. Her suggestion was: Quityourbellyaching! Can't you just see the possibilities? Perhaps this word has already become a staple in your personal dictionary. Have you said it to your two year old, to a teenager, or to a co-worker? Has it quickly crossed your mind while in line at the grocery store? This word has many uses, as I think we are a nation of "bellyachers."
Take, for instance, the heat wave that much of the U.S. experienced in mid-July. I can't tell you the number of people I heard complaining about the weather during that span of time. Even the weather people were complaining - and this is their life blood! Of course, I heard the same people (and weather people) complain about the cold and snowy winter, the rainy spring, and the too hot/too cold fall. And the complaining is not generally limited to the weather. It seems there is much for us to "bellyache" about while living our lives.
Then, I think about one of my best friends, whose family life has been turned upside down this year by illness. She doesn't bellyache. In fact, she has handled the situation with grace, humor, compassion, and a "we'll get through this" attitude. I also think about my houseguests in mid-July who had to endure that heat wave in a non air-conditioned cottage. There was more laughter and fun that week than any other this summer.
Bellyaching adds to our chaos. It takes the positive energy we all have and turns it into negativity. It can, for some people, become the only way that they see their lives. We will never be able to control the weather, or illness, or many of the unpleasant things in our lives, but we do have the power to control our reaction to it. So, quityourbellyaching and choose to thrive!
Thanks Patti, for inspiring this tip!
