Ôªø Tracy Knofla: Thriving In Chaos

Don't Eat Yellow Snow!

Today it was 81 degrees and sunny. I swam in a pool. Maybe you did too! So, why the sage advice about the yellow snow? Well, partly it's a joke on one of our Thriving Tips recipients and mostly it's just good advice. You never want to step in, let alone eat yellow snow. It's good solid advice that, in the heat of a beautiful summer day, doesn't seem to have much applicability. Yet, in a few short months, these will be words to live by.

It makes me think of other advice that you receive. How many times has someone tried to offer you a suggestion only to have you nod your head in a way that tells them you are not going to follow it? It is human nature to think you know the best way to solve your own problems while you are in the middle of them. However, when you are in the middle of the problem is precisely the time you need advice from an unbiased, caring or knowledgeable other. It's just hard for you to hear it at that exact moment..

So, where's the thriving here? Think back to the last time you experienced a bit of chaos. Did your sister say something that seemed trite at the time? Did you shut her out and continue doing your own thing? During that exchange did she uncover a nugget that could help you with the next chaotic moment? Was there some bit of truth that would help you thrive if you gave it a chance? Reflect on that conversation while there is no chaos making you crazy and I'm sure you will be better prepared with good advice when you need it.

Sometimes the "old wives tales" seem too old to matter in our crazy-paced modern life. But the early bird really does get the worm, an apple a day can keep the doctor away (or at least the HMO), and I am trying to prove that a bar of soap under the sheets in my bed will stop leg cramps. Hope something will work for you!

Got to go - early to bed, early to rise and all that!
